This Tiny Life

as the season turns

Hey folks,

Thank you so much for heading over here. We’re really excited—and, if we’re honest, a tad nervous—to finally share this with you.

As I’m jotting down these words, a skein of geese has just honked overhead through a rather grey sky. The trees are jostling in a blustery wind, their leaves just on the cusp of turning. It’s the early days of autumn, but there’s a freshness to the air.

There’s something very charming about autumn. I’m not a big fan of the term ‘cosy season’, but between you and me, my mind is already picturing the nights drawing in and the only sensible plan being to don the ’jamas and flop with a crossword to the riotous applause of rain on the roof.

For a long time, we’ve wanted to create a little something to mark this shift in the year. A box to open as the evenings draw in, to help carve out a moment to yourself as we settle into the rhythms of autumn.

With the help of some wonderful makers, we’ve come up with something we hope you’ll love – our ‘Settle into Autumn’ box—and we’d love to show you more.

Hey folks,

Thank you so much for heading over here. We’re really excited to tell you about this! And a tad nervous too.

Somehow it’s autumn already—we can’t quite believe it. As I write this, a skein of geese has just honked overhead and the trees are jostling about in the wind. The season is turning.

We wanted to create a little something to mark this shift in the year. A box to open as the evenings draw in, to help carve out a moment to yourself as we settle into the rhythms of autumn.

our first candle

At the heart of the box is Settle, the candle that hopefully you saw Gabby make alongside our friend Sarah in our recent video.

Sarah makes her candles in a waxery tucked away in her wild cottage garden in rural Oxfordshire. With her guidance, Gabby has been learning the craft of candle-making, choosing the scents and the small details to create something that would complement this time of year.

For both of us, autumn feels like a reset point. Summer is always such a hustle, and there’s something charming about gathering before the chillier weather arrives. We wanted to keep an uplifting feel to the scent, bringing together pure essential oils of sweet orange, lavender and bergamot. The freshness of the citrus is wonderful alongside the soft, floral lavender, with a wooden wick that crackles gently as it burns.

The candles are hand-poured using rapeseed and coconut wax, with around 75 hours of burn time. We hope they’ll fill your home with the comfort of the season.

the perfect brew

To accompany the candle, we’ve chosen a blissful herbal tea from Ceri and Ben at Gathered & Grown in Devon. If you’ve not come across them before, their story is so inspiring.

They grow, harvest and dry their herbs themselves, drying most in their solar-powered polytunnel before blending them by hand. There’s care in every part of the process, right through to the reusable tin that arrives at your door.

Our chosen blend brings together chamomile, lemon balm and lavender. The lavender echoes the scent of Settle—a lovely pairing for an evening tucked up inside, with a warm mug cupped in your hands.

Each tin holds 20g, enough for around 25 cups. We’ve included a few natural tea bags too, so you can make a brew even if you don’t have an infuser.

It’s what we love about working with smaller makers—hearing the stories behind the things we bring into our home and seeing the care that goes into making them.

we're keeping this bit secret

We’ve also got a little seasonal activity in the box for you to enjoy. Although reading that, it makes it sound like I’m setting you homework—I’m not, I promise! It’s just something to spend an autumn afternoon making something, without any screens involved, and notice the beauty and romance of this time of year. I don’t want to ruin the surprise, though, so I’m not saying any more!

There’ll also be a few words from us, and a couple of recipes for our favourite meals and makes at this time of year. We’re looking forward to getting back to having something blipping away on the woodburner. I can confirm that the first soup of the season has already been slurped down — A spiced red kuri squash with roasted garlic

Our hope is that this little package might become a bit of a ritual. Light the candle, enjoy a brew and settle into the activity or some gentle cooking. A little time just for yourself to mark the season. We so love the thought of it arriving at your doorstep—a parcel from our home to yours.

We hope you love it,

Jack and Gabby xx

The makers

Settle is poured in small batches with Sarah in her wild garden waxery in the Oxfordshire countryside — slowly, waiting until the wax reaches exactly the right temperature before the oils go in and it’s poured into amber jars. We’ll be there making them alongside her. The wax is a sustainable, vegan blend of rapeseed and coconut, the jars are made in the UK and meant to be used again.

Ceri and Ben grow every herb in the tea at Gathered & Grown in Devon — no-dig, peat-free, weeded by hand, with no artificial fertilisers or pesticides. They harvest by hand in good weather and dry most of the herbs in a solar-powered polytunnel. The tins are reusable, and once you’ve brewed the tea it can go on the compost.
